Advances in the design and capability of offshore oilfield anchor handling and towing vessels have not eliminated inbuilt design characteristics and weaknesses that can lead to damage or even capsizing. These problems may be faced in routine operation of vessels. Some operations, particularly those in deep water, pose particular threats. Some accidents are not uncommon and preventative actions are outlined with examples of events that AHT Masters could face. Checklists are given.
